Judge of Great Justice
Greetings, fellow players!
My name is Kettil Brochmann and I've been a fan of games since I was a little kid. I have played board games since forever, computer games since I was 5 and card games since I was 8. Ever since I have been playing different games of different varieties. And I have stopped playing most of them for different reasons. One of the few games that I've refused to let go of is The Spoils.
My local gaming store started carrying it around the release of part 2. I built a horrible Rogue deck, and lost to the more experieced gamers in the store. So it was back to the drawing board for me. I found all the cards online and read through them a few times. And I read the rules. And the cards and came up with a Ferret token deck that could compete with the Gearsmith/Warlords and Schproing decks that frequented the store. Then came SEED and unfortunately the demise of Tenacious Games. I put my cards on the shelf and didn't play much until I got the news that Spoils was alive again.
The Rules Guy
So I went back to the store with my deck and found some new players as most the old players had moved on. This left me as the most experienced player in the group. With more new players experimenting with cards more and more rules questions came up. A few of our players took the Judge test, so I figured I wouldn't have to. But trickier and trickier questions came up and most of the judges asked me for consultation since I had nothing better to do at the time than browse through rules and cards in my spare time.
After a few months I figured it would probably be for the best if I became a real judge and so I took the Judge test and passed. What I really liked about the test was that I had to think and actually look through the rules for some of the questions. It was somewhere around that time that I realised that I actually like rules. I started reading rulebooks for leisure and compared rules of different games, found loopholes and tried to break games that I've played a lot. I became the guy to ask if any rule question arose and I really enjoyed it.
Given that the Comprehensive Rules Reference needed an update and the game needed a new Head Judge since Terence bowed out after a great era of judging for great justice I thought that I might be suited for the position – and happily Arcane Tinmen thought so too :-)
I have started to assemble a team of judges to help me update the Comprehensive Rules Reference, and we are getting on with that. We are also working on updating the Judge test to reflect the mechanics of SEED and SEED 2. Overall, we're updating things to make it easier for players to understand what's going on, but in the end, it will be the same rules that you've always known and loved. Just with less confusion around them :-)
Feedback welcome!
Feel free to message me on the forums (Kettil Brochmann) or send me an email to "kettil (dot) brochmann (at) gmail (dot) com" with any suggestions, comments, or even gripes and I will personally answer you. If you choose to send me an email, though, pleasure be sure to put something Spoils related in the subject line so I know what it pertains to.
Becoming a Spoils judge
If you are interested in becoming a judge, then Jeff Millegan who is also part of the new judge team will be happy to set you up with our judge test. Just read the rules over and over again and then send Jeff an email at "mmillegan (at) yahoo (dot) com".
Thanks for reading this far - now go out there and enjoy some Spoils!
