Meet the Pro: Matthew “Moxless” Kucklinca
Continuing our Meet the Pro article series we hop back to New York to meet another member of Team Hopper (Grasshopper's Comics, NY).
This time we have the pleasure of meeting Matthew “Moxless” Kucklinca, who had the distinct pleasure of being in the finals of both the National Limited Championships and the National Constructed Championships last year.
This series is your chance to “meet” some of our top players before you have a chance to actually meet them at the tournament tables.
What drew you into playing The Spoils?
It was a competitive game and I wanted a new game that challenged the norm. Also the game mechanics.
Why do you continue to play The Spoils?I've always been a loyal player. The most important thing to me is finding a game that you like to play and not just for the monetary reward. Although it is nice it is not necessary. I am a gamer and always will be.
What is your favorite moment related to The Spoils?
Gencon 2011, being in the finals for both the National Limited and Constructed Championships and having well known players know that Moxless is a tough opponent and then beating them. Hey, no hard feelings guys.
What is your least favorite moment related to The Spoils?
Punting big time in Boston 13k, ugh such a bad memory.
(Editor's Note: It is certainly a bad memory for Moxless, but that doesn't stop the rest of us Team Hopper players from giving him crap about it. -Terence)
Where do you play Spoils the most?
Grasshopper's Comics in Long Island, New York, with my crew.
What is your greatest accomplishment as a Spoils player?
Promoting the game like this, giving advice, helping with deck construction, and trying to get new players into the game.
What do you hope to see in the future of The Spoils?
I'd like to see it get back to its glory as the best card game out there and having a huge turnout for our tournaments.
Which trade is your favorite and why?
Warlord, I love dragons. But to play, Greed or Obsession as I like playing defense.
What play style would you say suits you best?
See above. I am the control deck type, I have never been a fan of rush decks.
Are you a member of any “team?”
Team Hopper, live and die by my brothers.
What is your forum handle?
I don't have one, I'm not on the computer often.
How long have you been playing Spoils?
Since Open Beta released in 2006.
If you could describe Spoils in one word, what would it be?
Awesome.
Do you have any advice for new players?
Learn the mechanics and keep play testing just like any other game. Learn the cards and figure out the synergy between trades. Also, as a rule of thumb, never let your opponent have more resources than you. One is manageable, but more than that and you could run into trouble.
What events are you most looking forward to?
Gen-Con 2012
Any funny stories to share about The Spoils?
National Limited Championships Top 8 Draft, Seed 2 pack. Everyone was falling out of their chairs (literally) because the pack had all number one picks and caused seat six to scream out “Oh my god this is still in this pack?!” I will never forget people falling out of their chairs, it was epic.
What is your favorite Spoils format (constructed, seed constructed, seed draft, 2nd edition limited, etc) and why?
Draft. Draft is the hardest thing to do as a gamer, and you cannot net deck, which I hate ;-)
What is your favorite card flavor wise and why?
Runic Field Enhancer, who doesn’t like Ghostbusters.
(Editor's Note: Ghostbusters is a pretty fantastic movie. -Terence)
What is your favorite card play wise and why?
Mau Party, Pay five, draw five, and then gain two influence. Seems like a good deal.
Any arch-enemies in The Spoils?
None anymore now that I’ve beaten him twice ;-)
