battles and starter Qs

hi guys,

At the RPC 2010 the spoils was presented my friends. Certainly the battle system was reduced. Now we had bought the starter kit and want to battle. I had read the manual but the battle system is a little bit confusing to me.
We had search here in the board but we dont get it because all examples that I had found was an 1 on 1 battle.

our main problems:

1. My attacking Team attacks an blocking team which had 2 faster guys. These guys has together an strenght of 6 (example) and my attacking group has 5 hp at least. Which of my guys are desroyed?

2. Why should I devide my dmg? Only for dmg to the faction or?

The player controlling the card (blockers first because they are faster) gets to assign the damage however he/she likes.

Damage must be assigned to blockers while they exist. You can assign that damage however you like. If no blockers exist then you can assign damage to whatever you were attacking (a location or the faction).

I hope that makes sense.

mmhhh if I understand correctly then:

Character Str/hp/sp

Attack group:
Character A 3/3/3
Character B 1/4/3
Character C 2/5/2
Character B 7/1/1


Blocking group:
Character 1 3/1/4
Character 2 3/1/4
Character 3 0/2/3
Character 4 1/1/3

• Char A and B Attack! (Speed 3)
• The defeding player can decide if Char 1 and 2 block
• He decide to block and deal 6 dmg (3+3 str)
• because the block chars are faster, they attack first
• now the defending player can choose how many dmg the attack chars get and also can chosse which is destoryed (because he said "this char gets 4 dmg and this the last 3")

if both had the same speed they attack simultaneously and everyone gets the dmg.

is this correct?

Is it possible that the blocking faster char can deal his damage later (example after the speed 3 "round") to destroy one slower (ex. speed of 2) char?

He can assign his damage where ever he likes. So if you want to assign to the slower character you can. But he only assigns damage at his speed. When the 4 speed assigns he assigns. Where he assigns you choose. You can spilt it up however you like. One here. One there. Six there.

I think it is very important we are explicit on this combat scenario for you. I want to break this down even further than anyone else has so you get a grasp on the steps of combat.

First, I'm assuming you've made an attacking party toward the Blocking Player's Faction with characters A, B, C, and D.

Second, I'm assuming there are no tactics, abilities, or effects being played before blockers.

Third, I'm assuming the Blocking Player forms a blocking party with characters 1, 2, 3, and 4 (we won't discuss the rationale here).

Fourth, I'm assuming there are no tactics, abilities, or effects being played after blockers.

Fifth, we follow the game rules for resolving combat. We check for the highest speed characters in combat. Characters 1 and 2 have speed 4. The Blocking Player controls those characters, so she assigns their damage.
- I'll assume this likely scenario - She assigns damage to kill off characters C and D.

Sixth, I'm assuming there are no tactics, abilities, or effects being played before speed 4 damage.

Seventh, the assigned damage destroys characters C and D. Place the destroyed characters into the owner's discard pile and continue combat since there are characters who haven't assigned damage.

Eighth, check for the next highest speed characters in combat. Characters A, B, 3 and 4 have speed 3. The Attacking Player assigns damage first since both players have characters with speed 3.
- I'll assume this likely scenario - The attacking player assigns damage to kill off characters 1, 2, and 3.
- The blocking player assigns damage as well now.
- I'll assume this likely scenario - The blocking player assigns 1 damage (non-lethal) to character A.

Ninth, I'm assuming there are no tactics, abilities, or effects being played before speed 3 damage.

Tenth, the assigned damage destroys characters 1, 2, and 3 while character A takes 1 damage (non-lethal). Place the destroyed characters into the owner's discard pile and end combat since there are no more characters who haven't assigned damage.


Of note here, if all of the defending player's blockers were destroyed before speed 2 and the attacking player still had characters C and D, they would assign and deal their damage direct to the blocking player's faction at speed 2 and 1 respectively. Does that make sense?

Also, note that you can form four separate attacking parties with one character each forcing the blocking player to make more difficult blocking decisions (again, we won't discuss the rationale here).

mmhh okay, I can choose one character but do not attack with him this "speed round", next "speed round" I pick this character again (because his speed is higher and i can choose)? like a fake attack? is this right?

607 Attacking
607.1 To attack, follow these steps:

607.1a Announcement – Choose a faction or location you don’t control and announce you are attacking it. If you forget to choose a target, by default you’re attacking your opponent’s faction.

You can only validly announce an attack under the right circumstances. If you have no potential attackers or if an effect is preventing an attack, the battle ends immediately at this step before anything has a chance to trigger as a result of the attack.

607.1b Attackers – Choose one or more characters you control that can attack. A character can attack if it is not depleted and if you have controlled it since the start of the turn. Deplete these characters. They form the attacking party.

607.1c Tactics & Abilities – You may play tactics and use abilities as many times as you want. Then, your opponent may do the same.

If an effect causes any number of characters to become members of the blocking party during this step, the blocking party isn’t actually formed yet. The characters should be added to the blocking party after it’s formed during the next step. If no blocking party is formed during the next step, the characters become the blocking party. However, effects that apply to the formation of a battle party don’t happen since a battle party wasn’t technically formed in this case.

607.1d Blockers – The defending player may choose one or more characters they control that are not depleted. If they do, those characters form the blocking party. Otherwise, there is no blocking party during this battle.

607.1e Resolution – Resolve the battle.


608 Resolving a Battle
608.1 To resolve a battle, follow these steps:

608.1a Tactics & Abilities – The attacking player may play tactics and use abilities as many times as they want. Then, the defending player may do the same.

608.1b Speed Level – Find the highest speed among characters that have not yet assigned battle damage during this battle. X is that speed.

608.1c Assign Attacker’s Damage – All attacking characters with X speed that have not yet assigned battle damage during this battle assign damage equal to their strength divided however the attacking player wants to the blocking party. If there are no members left in the blocking party, the attacking characters assign their battle damage to the target of the attack instead.

608.1d Assign Blocker’s Damage – All blocking characters with X speed that have not yet assigned battle damage during this battle assign damage equal to their strength divided however the defending player wants to the attacking party.

608.1e Tactics & Abilities – The attacking player may play tactics and use abilities as many times as they want. Then, the defending player may do the same.

608.1f Damage Infliction – All assigned battle damage is inflicted simultaneously. If more than one character inflicts damage to the same thing during this step, the sum of the damage is inflicted as a single amount.

608.1g Repeat – Repeat steps A through F until all characters in the battle have either assigned their battle damage or are no longer in play.

608.1h End – Deplete all surviving characters in the battle.

608.2 If there is nothing left for a character to assign its battle damage to, the character doesn’t actually do anything but it is still considered to have assigned its battle damage for the purposes of ending the resolution loop.

Example – An attacking party featuring characters with many different speeds is targeting a location. If the first wave of characters destroys the location, the remaining characters don’t assign any damage. However, they are considered to have assigned damage for the purposes of ending the battle (i.e. the battle resolution doesn’t just infinitely repeat).
