Thread: Texas' Winter Limited

    Thumbs down Texas' Winter Limited

I was going to wait around and see if anyone else posted about this or if the shop I went to/Tenacious had anything to say about it, but before it gets lost to the annals of time/tournaments forgotten I thought I should give my tournament report for the Texas Winter Limited Championships.

I contacted the store, Ninja Pirate about 3 days before the tournament and was happy to hear that they had "just gotten their prize support." An inquiry as to the date revealed that the tournament would be on Saturday and start at about 1 with registration beginning ostensibly at noon. Too bad for Jason M of Mansfield, I thought, since he had told me that he was lobbying for a Sunday tournament that wouldn't conflict with some big Yu-Gi-Oh release on that Saturday.

    Well.

I drove from my home town to Pflugerville, which is about 60 miles away and just outside of Austin. It was very reasonable, I figured, and closer than any other The Spoils tournament in Texas yet, if you don't count the 5k "bus stop" in Waco. (And who would, really?)

I got there early and asked about the tournament, but the guy minding the store had no idea when it would happen or who was going to run it. After an hour and a half, one of the owners got there and told me that "most of the locals who play The Spoils had gone to San Antonio for the Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament" About an hour later she told me that it for sure wasn't going to happen that day (there had been a chance, apparently) and it couldn't really happen on Sunday because of some scheduling problems and that they would call me if Tenacious let them do it at a later date. She gave me 2 packs of Seed for my trouble and I bought a copy of "Pimp:The Backhanding"

Never even got to see the prize support.

Yay Texas south of Hillsboro The Spoils scene.

I only recently got into the Spoils game a few weeks ago, living in Fort Worth Texas, Collectibles Continuum is the only place locally that has even heard of the Spoils. I've been there once to purchase a few starters, and the owners said they had something in the works coming soon as far as organized play goes. Hopefully it will work out, however I'm not sure how far Fort Worth and Mansfield is from your location. In all actuality I would love more people to play this game with. All in all I've played it a handful of times with one person at the college I go to (UTA) and with my girlfriend when I go to stay with her monthly in Ohio. Thats it.

I find the game very fun, and will be sticking with it, but hopefully some kind of general interest will build or attempt to be promoted. I literally accidently ran into this site and discovered the game, otherwise I wouldn't have heard a whisper of it anywhere around here. The game is solid, fun, and the way I hear it the tournament scene is good as well, I suppose I can only hope that the need to drive, promote and advertise this game will awaken soon with the company. Im a frequenter of about four local comic books shops and none of them had even heard of the game before I mentioned it, there must be something lacking in an attempt to get it out.

On one hand I see the desire in keeping the game "pure" as far as the competitive element goes, but quite obviously by doing this your sacrificing the casual player, and by doing that your loosing what would be atleast 75% of your player base and profits.

I just dont want to see this die. It has everything it needs, now just push it out the door.

Wosh, I'm not surprised in the least. When I finally got a hold of someone to inform me as to when the tourny would be (about 5 phone calls) I did informed the individual that Saturday really seemed to be a bad choice with Yugi regionals in SA and I couldn't get any of my crowd down there since we were running a release draft for Phantom Darkness that I had to be there to run. The person on the other end of the phone proceded to tell me about some wonderful Yugi tourny they were putting together...I only play a little Yugi to judge events at my store - I could care less.

So, I wonder what they are planning on doing with all that free product! Being a limited tournament they got TON. I might be interested in crusing down there, but I'm not so sure we wouldn't have to bring the entire tournament. Let me know if youhear anything!
Total STE: 56 and likely to busy to get more for the rest of the year - lol!

You didn't get operational product, just product to "pay" for the prize support.

Yeah - for invitationals they would get everything. Still, that's like 4 boxes ($200 retail), handful of promos plus the sheet...

Speaking of Texas Tournaments. What is the exact Day & Time of the Winter Constructed Championship in Mansfield? I believe I might have a couple of players to bring up there to play.
