Thread: Swarm of Gnats & timing questions

Default Swarm of Gnats & timing questions

Ok, here is a scenario I was facing against my friend:

My turn, I played Rapine. I pay the 5 resources, then the cost of the card makes me destroy a character. I chose my Swarm of Gnats.

My opponent only has a Tactician Vacation in his hand and he decides to respond to Rapine with it.

My, my argument is that Rapine makes me pay the cost first before he can respond. Swarm of gnats will then trigger causing him to discard Tactician before he can play it.

So who is correct in this situation?

    Second question:

My opponent plays a gear item on a character, Luterderm Prototype.
I respond with Srag on that character.

My opponent argues that the gear's cost is attachign to the character, so it is already attached, so he will get teh effect because the character is removed form play.

I argued that the item is "entering play" and therefore is not attached yet. Destroying the character will cause the prototype to just get discarded b/c there is no longer a target.

Thanks in advance for the help. First time posting here although I do come here often to read the boards.

In the first situation, you are definitely correct. Costs must be paid before the card can be responded to. Any triggered effects that happen because of that cost will happen still before any response can happen.

In the second situation, the gear's cost is not attaching to the character. The cost is picking the character that it will be attached to. If you kill the character in response to the prototype (in this case with a scrag) the prototype will go to the discard pile. The ability will not trigger because it was never on the character.

On the Gear bit I'm not so sure. I asked for a ruling a few days ago regarding this in the judges forum, recieved the ruling and no one has disagreed with that ruling.

Scrag will kill the character before Luteoderm Prototype hits play and any of its abilities can trigger.

As I said, the prototype will Pick a character as part of the cost of playing the card. When the character is no longer there the prototype will go directly to the discard pile. The prototype was never attached to the character. The ability will never trigger.
