Thread: Just Starting to Get Spoiled!

Default Just Starting to Get Spoiled!

Hello all! You don't know me, (because I'm new to this game), but I wanted to ask a couple of questions:

    1) What is the best way to start my collection and learn this game
    2) What are the best precon decks for modification
    3) What are your suggestions for a beginner (I have experience with multiple other TCG's)

I won a Seed 3 pack from The Spoils Facebook page and am looking forward to advancing my collection! I've watched the game for some time now (about 2 years) and am finally ready to start a community in my home town. I just want to know what's best, what everyone recommends, and if anyone is willing to donate to my cause!

    Thanks!

Welcome to the boards! If you have experience with other card games, I would recommend limited as the best way to expand your collection, as in my opinion, limited is the best part of this wonderful game! Given that there is only one constructed format at this time, I would actually recommend not starting with a precon, but rather accumulating stuff through limited, and trading it into a constructed deck after you get a bit of a feel for the game and what's good. Also, posting about an area (say for me, I put my hometown as central Maryland) will hel you find players. Obviously posting specifics on the Internet is bad, but I can still find players closely by listing my information as such. Best of luck with this awesome game! Oh yeah- go to gencon. The best events are there, and many of the bigger names attend, both from a players perspective and from an official capacity (judge captain, organized play coordinator etc)

The Baton Rouge group will be running tournaments, I'm told, though I'm not sure if we'll be doing limited or constructed or a mix of both. I have a bunch of extra cards I've been wanting to give to a new home, so if you ever go to one of the BR tournaments or if we cross paths wherever, remind me.

If they don't do limited tournaments, you'll want to get a precon or two just for the resources, though. The two-player starter shouldn't be too expensive and would have resources for four of the trades (not Gearsmith).

That was another question I had: Would anyone be able to donate some resources?

Thanks for the offer on the card; I'll likely take you up on that whenever I return home.

As others have said: If possible, start drafting or playing limited with your fiends. It's the best way to increase your collection as well as learning card interactions and mechanics. Spoils really shines when it comes to limited/draft, so if you can play that and add to your collection at the same time, it's a win-win situation.

Other than that, buy champion packs or starter decks for resources only, then go boosters. The Power level of Seed 2 makes it a good starting buy until you get more into the game and want to go for more combos. Seed is also a pack with lots of powerful cards and the highly useful dual thresh resources.

Welcome to this wonderful game and have a fun time learning and playing! ^_^

I will check with my friends if they have any gearsmith resources they don't want since you mentioned that was going to be your first deck. I don't have a ton of resources outside my decks since you don't get them in boosters. If your local store doesn't carry starters or sealed packs, Gamers Paradise outside of Baton Rouge is supposed to carry product soon I think. And if they do draft / sealed you'll get some through that. A sealed pack comes with five of each resource I think.

I have missed out on heading to BR for the past three weekends but am really excited to suddenly have fellow Spoilers in the area. Been playing a year with a few friends but no game store carrying it or anyone else playing.

Welcome to The Spoils and the boards!

    1) Sealed and Draft are probably the best way to learn this game AND start your collection at the same time. As others have said, you will learn the flow of the game and the interactions between cards very well with sealed and draft. Plus, a lot of cards really shine in the Limited formats and disappear when you start Constructed play, so Limited events are definitely the best way to get a feel for all the cards.

    2) At this point in time the Seed Pre-con decks are probably best for modification. Everyone seems to prefer the Seed block (Seed 1, Seed 2, and Seed 3) over the First Edition Block (Part One, Part Two, Second Edition) and the cards are, in general, considered better than the First Edition cards. They're also the most readily available as the First Edition Precons are becoming harder to find as they weren't remade when Second Edition was printed.

    3) Get together with friends and just go through whatever cards you have. Read them together, discuss them, ask questions, answer questions. You learn the game much faster when playing/testing/discussing in a group because each person has their own perspective and may think of something or ask a question that didn't cross your mind.

Hope these answers help and that you enjoy playing this great game!

Thanks for all the great info everyone. I'm really looking forward to it. I've already piqued some interests back home, and think that the game will attract a good number of people.

That's strange that staple resources don't come in the boosters. I wonder why that is?

I think the idea is that you would get your resources from starter decks or the limited format, so they'd be wasted space in a booster pack. After a couple sets, resources would become useless extra cards for most players, who'd already have way more of them than they need.
