I guess it is supposed to be a nine-lives kitty and not losing tokens while going to discard pile?
Problem with the wording is that it doesn't trigger until it's in the discard. At that point all tokens are cleared.
Then it comes back into play with an additional token, which would put 1 token on the card. It would always only have 1 token.
If this card is put into your discard pile from play with fewer than 8 tokens on it, put a token on it instead.
True.. One second.
I guess it would something like this:
If this card is put into your discard pile from play with fewer than 8 tokens on it, instead reduced all damage inflicted to this card to 0 and put a token on it.
That's better, but it means it still dies to a -1 life effect.
That's why I prefer a trigger. I think the original wording may technically work since area-change triggers should be able to track how it was before. If not, just make it explicit:
If this card is put into your discard pile from play with fewer than 8 tokens on it, put it into play under your control with one more token than it had when it was last in play.
Actually:
If this card is put into your discard pile from play with fewer than 8 tokens on it, you may put a token on it instead. If you do, reduced all damage inflicted to this card to 0, deplete it and remove it from combat.
"if this card is" or "if this card would be". Is it a replacement effect for going to the discard pile or is it actually going to the discard pile everytime and jumping back in to play?
I play Spoils better than you do.
