I really like the idea of a "ritual" type card...really, really like it. However, inflicting damage just isn't the Arcanist way. I'm not fundamentally opposed to cards crossing flavor barriers, especially at increased cost, so this could work.

Yeah, I also think this is a cool card. Character type support is always nice as well.
If you don't think Arcanists should inflict damage, you could just change the name and text to:
Shrine of the Gigantic Ball of Bouncing Slime
...
FIRE
COST: Remove 8 tokens from this card. Destroy this card. Pick four or less non-resource cards.
EFFECT: Return the picked cards to the owner's hand. Select two cards from your opponent's hand. These cards are descarded.
Or something similar with the Arcanist fetish for bounce... ^_^

Alternatively, if we were to change "Arcanist" to "Warlord" and "Wizard" to "Soldier," we might also have an interesting idea.

I don't think this is out of flavor for Seed's Arcanists. Keep in mind what Josh said about them:
The issue is that Arcanists in Seed are evil wizards, not the wacky quotidian ritual people of the world of First Edition. So, all of their "spells" have been named as such...just like in Seed. You can expect a little more spell-like feel from their tactic names in general.
A fireball is probably the archetypical spell for a wizard. That's where the idea of this card came from. Now, what are the characteristics of a really big spell?
1. Takes a while to cast.
2. While being cast it's vulnerable to interruption.
3. Big effect if cast succeeds.
4. If you want to reduce cast time, get more wizards to help you.
That's where the idea for this card comes from; within this context, direct damage seems appropriate.
Of course, this is just one spell. The general mechanic is one which can be used for many spells, which can have varying cast times. So you could have a hand-destruction spell, a summoning spell, a pants-vanishing spell, etc.

My point is more that Arcanists do not have cards that inflict non-combat damage. They have a couple of destruction cards, but those are Strength based rather than through damage. That's what I meant by not Arcanist flavored.

That's not flavor, that's game mechanics. Arcanists generally don't have the mechanic of direct damage, but a big fireball is in favor for evil wizards.
Oh, and Voidal Poisoning does non-combat damage. ;)
