We had our tournament on Labor Day here in Vincennes,In. The majority of the players where Magic players. the event went well but the players and myself had some issues.
Card Power/Resource Cost: I was seeing cards with high cost with blah abilities and cards with low or no cost with insainly powerful abilites. "PLUCK" Are you kidding me!! three resource for a character that every turn can take the best card in your opponents discard pile. This guy can be up and running on turn 3. Crazy! He should have to be destroyed to do his ability.
Adult Content: If this game is for adults only then I dont have an issue with this. But if you plan on having people under the age of 16 playing this game then some of the flavor text and art needs toned down.
Most of the players at the tournament were adult so this wasnt a problem. Keeping every focused on the game was. All the content became a distraction. It took you away from the game.
Allot of the time, well almost all the time, games went to a draw due to time. Even the experienced player who played at Gen-Con couldn't close the deal and went to draw. Only until I made finals no time limit did people actualy win but games went on and on.( Like this post)
Rage needs more, well, "Rage". I wasnt seeing the power here where it was expected. This should be the Icon that breaks controls back.
More spot romoval is needed in limited. No enough to handle peoblem in limited format.
Construct is going to see Greed/Deciption deck ruling.
I fully understand this is Beta and a game under construction. I just feel there is no real balance in the game. Maybe more play testing on my part is needed. I look forward to seeing this game develop.

Just so that is clear that I am speaking from experience, I top-eighted at PAX.

And on turn 3, your opponent will have nothing in their discard pile. Pluck is an awesome card, but he is rare and he is fragile. When I have played him in sealed, I find that I feel I am taking a big risk if I play him before I have 12 resources available.

How many people were in the tournament? They all could not play 1 game in 40 minutes?
Rage needs more, well, "Rage". I wasnt seeing the power here where it was expected. This should be the Icon that breaks controls back.
What? In what format are Warlords underpowered?
More spot romoval is needed in limited. No enough to handle peoblem in limited format.
Perhaps you are not being conservative enough with your removal.
I just feel there is no real balance in the game.
What specifically is out of balance?

Croste - I have never played a Limited game of the Spoils, but from the playing I have done in constructed, I have to say I disagree with everything you said.

Hey Ir0n W!LL,
My posting is from my experience with my FIRST limited Spoils tournament. Which was also the play groups first time playing. We was playing out of the 8 player tournament kit.
You are correct in saying that in turn three there "may not" be anything worth while or at all in my opponents discard pile. I'm just pointing out that it is an AWESOME card for the cost. My personal opinion is that it is over powered.
Thank you for pointing out the thread. It is good to see that other adults share my view on the content issue.
As I stated earlier, there was 8 players with maybe 1/2 of the matches going to draw. Maybe it was inexperience from the players not seeing a clear advantage to attack. In almost every case it was the Gen-Con player who ran it to time. (He "says" he won 2nd place. But I dont know this for sure.)
I didnt see any of the power from the Warlords. It maybe that no one played them or I just didnt see it. If it is there than hopefully I see it the next time I play.
I only saw 2 spot removal in my packs and really didnt see anyone else play anymore than 1 spot removal during game play. By spot removal I mean killing permanents in play. I'm just saying I didnt see enough, more would be nice.
The balance I refer to is all of the above. Like I said before, maybe I just had a bad draft and need another round to see if I find better balance with experience. If balance is a stalemate each match then well... Its balanced!
Great White Nothing,
Try some limited and see if you agree. Ofcourse your not going to see it in constructed because you have the cards you need. In limited you have to build with what you got. I just feel the packs wasn't showing me any love.

I went thru some of the cards the other players had. NOW I see the Rage. There was some nice low cost fast characters and then some nice late game beaters. It seems that the spot removal I'm wanting is mostly in Rage. My adult content issue is solved mostly because it is an adult oreinted game, which suits me fine. Now I know to not allow young players in my tournaments. Most of my balance complaints have been answered. I still feel Pluck needs fixed though. And I still feel more needs to be done to push players into action to resolve the game. Maybe a location that make your opponent lose 1 faction each turn. This would move the game into the red zone nicely. And as for Greed/Deception deck ruling, who knows. I need to see some good constructed to change my mind on that issue.

I really think you are overestimating Pluck.
Well the reason Pluck seemed so overpowered in the tournament (I played in it and won it.) is because he was my win condition in every game. I was the only one who had played the game before and played a very similar deck at gencon and knew how to use Pluck. (Like play him when you have 7 resources for him and his effect.) Also no one was running a lot of removal except for me. I also was playing a lot of shutdown with a Banker Rogue deck so it was hard to getrid of him anyway. I think he could cost a few more resources but otherwise he is fine.

Exactly though, he's "fine", not broken.
Congrats on the victory. :)

OK, LOL. I now see you both agree Pluck is too cheap. You both agree he needs to have a higher resource cost. So... now you agree he is overpowered for his cost.:)
I never said he was all the way broken and needed removed, just fixed. A higher cost would also make it more reasonable to me. Glad ya'll have seen it my way.;)
The spot removal in the game, i must admit, does seem to be enough to kill fragile Pluck. Its just when I saw how effectively Omen used him, I was blown away.
He had a realy nasty combo going. Now if I can only convence him to attack with a card like Pluck on the table to keep resetting his deffense with his opponents characters.:p
