i don't have any idea how to play this game and i've never been to a tournament, but i noticed there is one this weekend in the cities within an hour of me. i'd love to go try out the game, but i'm intimidated as, like i said, i have never participated in a tournament. i don't know how the mechanics of a tournament work as far as creating decks from the cards you get etc. and it would seem rather difficult to create a deck not knowing how to play etc.

help me out a little guys.

The PDF of the rule book is a great start (http://www.thespoils.com/spoils/images/art/SpoilsRulebook.pdf). It's only 2 pages long, so it's not too hard to read through. After that check out places like the Consolidated Rules Questions thread (http://www.thespoils.com/spoils/showthread.php?t=68)for some tricky situations. If you've still got questions about parts of the game, ask and someone around here is bound to answer.

Hope that helps.

You get six packs and you need to make a deck from those cards. You don't get any resources in the packs, so I would recommend using about 30-35 cards from the packs and filling in the other 15-20 with resources. This may not make sense right now, but the more occupations you use, the fewer non-resource cards you want to use. So if you end up using three occupations, try something like this:

13 cards of occupation a

12 cards of occupation b

7 cards of occupation c

but make sure that all of the cards in occupation c have a threshold of no more than two. Ideally you would have all of them with a threshold of one, but that won't happen much. Of course only using two occupations is best of all.

For the above deck, your resources should look something like this:

7 of occupation a

7 of occupation b

4 of occupation c

Then again, don't be afraid to sway from this. As for the actual cards to put in your deck, try to have at least 13 characters of not more. Any destruction tactic or item is awesome in this format. Try not to include too many high threshold or cost cards. But try to have a few as in this format they are hard to stop without the afforsaid awesome destruction.

Any of the four 'bomb' tactics are just begging to be used. I'd put them in this order from best to worst in this format:

1. Grand Theft All
2. Degenerate Molestation
3. Downsizing
4. Dragon's Anthem

In the end it depends on the deck you run, but that's what I've found. The reason Dragon's Anthem is at the bottom is because of another thing that rocks the boat in Sealed; speed altering cards. If your opponent plays Dragons Anthem when you both have sizable boards and you are lucky enough to have Jumping Screamspider, I'm voting for you in this matchup. No matter how strong your opponents characters are, they will never have the chance to strike.

so i've read the rules, and i've played mtg, star wars ccg, wars ccg, game of thrones and we are starting mystical empire and our first miniatures game horrorclix, but i don't really have any idea how to play this game still. i mean i think i could complete a game against someone, but can i go to the tournament to learn the game and try it? am i going to get a bunch of serious players mad? i'll just be giving them my entry fee to pay for their prizes right? and i get to try the game and get some cards and tell my friends whether or not to start the game.

You won't get anyone mad. Or you shouldn't at any rate. This games just a Beta, its here for people like you to learn about the game, including how to play it. Odds are that not many people there will be experienced Spoils players. I'd be hesitant to say that there are any experienced players at this game yet. We're all still learning. I've played, probably, less than twenty times, but I've beaten doc in constructed, and he won an Ipod shuffle tournament at Gencon. So really we're all more or less on the same plane.

axl,

If you have the opportunity to attend an Open Beat 8 person event/tournament, DO IT! Those ones are free so you've got nothing to lose. Chances are, there'll be 1 or 2 players who have played before and the other 6 or 7 will be learning with you.
It's a very simple game to learn, especially if you're already a CCG veteran. It's the depth of strategy that can make this game seem daunting (I suppose) but in sealed, everyone's equal as far as card pool, so it's as level a playing field you're going to get.

Try it! If you're that concerned, ask the store owner/manager if you can show up an hour early to get a one-on-one demo or something.

Trust me, it'll be worth it.

If you don't try it now, you'll be kicking yourself in the back side in November when the full release comes out and you're on the sidelines wishing you had...

If you want, email me at doc8466@rcn.com I'll answer anything and everything you want to know until you're satisfied you're good to go!

How's that? :D :chomp: :D

During Open Beta, you sure won't be paying for their prizes. Most open beta tournaments are free or crazy cheap. At PAX we ran 8 person tournaments for iPod shuffles. These cost $5 to enter. $40 < MSRP iPod shuffle :chomp: No one that doesn't work here has played the game for more than a month, so no one is an expert yet.

Are the resources also provided by the store, or are we expected to have obtained them elsewhere? I'm going to a beta this weekend to see how this all works out.

Resources/factions are in the tournament kits.

Plenty of them (Resources that is) The tournament provider gets around 50+ of each resource so once you open your packs you should have the opportunity to build whatever you wish with the ammount of resources you wish... for the most part...

On the Tournament I ran last Saturday in my store It seemed 6 of the 8 people went with Greed/Deception decks so by buildout ending the greed resources was sitting at about 14 left which will leave me a bit skimpy if I run a second tournament. But at least there's a cure for this since I provided game sleeves for all my players (a practical pre-req due to the switching of card control) we are able to use the PDF printouts for additional resources. (Thank god for the downloadables)

If I was to give 2 pieces of advice for players and retailers its:

#1 Sleeves are a godsend and luckily not expensive to supply
#2 Have fun with breaking the cards (ie find rules and card combos which help with the future corrections and helping the game truely achive gold status for november) without errors and the occasional fuzzy rule Tenacious wouldn't constantly be trying to improve upon their work.
