Bask Bomb on a Single Character

Question about Bask Bomb and when exactly an attack ends.

Let's say I attack with a single character and my opponent blocks with some high life character. I use a Bask Bomb to blow up my character. I imagine that combat is over before the Bask Bomb gets to have its effect because I'm no longer attacking. Is that correct? Or does the Bask Bomb still deal damage?

Just so everyone's clear, a battle will not end until all the steps in "How to Resolve a Battle" have been completed. Specifically this means that playing Bask Bomb and destroying the only character in an attacking party will not end the battle.
