So a few weeks ago I had a crazy idea to try a new casual format. It sounds complicated at first but trust me, it's worth it.
Each player has to build a very specific deck which must:
Use all 5 Trades.
Have a sequence of either a Character or a Tactic of each numeric cost 0-7 for each Trade.
Have a sequence of either an Item or a Location of each numeric cost 0-6 (from any Trades).
Have 6 of each staple Resource (or 5 of each staple and one of each double Resource).
Use 2 face-down staple Resources as the starting Resources.
That means that the deck will have 8 cards from each Trade (not counting items or locations), 7 items and/or locations, 30 Resources, and 2 face-down staples. I sleeved Faction cards backwards for the starting Resources, but you can use staples, or cards sleeved backwards. I know that sounds crazy when your starters provide no threshold, but we came up with a Faction that makes it work. These restrictions make deck-building interesting, and with new cards, new options will become available.
The Faction for A5S starts at 30 Influence, and has normal Restore/Develop/Draw/Resource rules, but also lets you pay 5 at any time to search your deck for a staple Resource and put it in your hand. The Faction also provides 1 of each Threshold.
Once there are more Items and Locations, the deck-building may become a sequence of 0-7 cost Items, and a sequence of 0-5 cost Locations. I have also thought of including one of each 3-Tier Location (Drill Garrison, Heist Training Grounds, etc...) in addition to the Item/Location sequence.
Side Note: As a house rule, we have been playing with no Unique cards. If you and your friends would like to allow or dis-allow Uniques, then do whatever is the most fun! Other options could be 1 Unique per Trade, or whatever you want. When I thought of the format, my collection was relatively small, and no Unique cards seemed more fair.
Ken, Zwidar and I have been playing for a couple of weeks now (I had to build 2 of the decks because they thought I was crazy at first) and the format is really fun. I encourage everyone to give it a try, and let us know what you think. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to post.
